Stairwells and hallways are the two spaces in a house that get the least design attention and present the most awkward measuring problems. The floor moves. The ceiling is often twice the height of everywhere else. There is rarely a piece of furniture to give a sense of scale. And the one thing that absolutely must work — being able to see the edge of a step — is the thing overhead lighting is worst at.
Here is how to approach both.

The stairwell fixture: measure from the highest tread
This is the measurement that catches almost everybody. When a fixture hangs over a staircase, the clearance you care about is not from the floor at the bottom. It is from the highest step that sits underneath any part of the fixture.
You need a minimum of 7 ft (213 cm) from that tread to the lowest point of the fixture. Work it out before ordering, because the difference between measuring from the ground floor and measuring from the fourth step can easily be 3 ft, and that is the difference between a fixture that hangs beautifully and one that has to be shortened after delivery.
The practical method: stand on the highest step that the fixture will hang over, reach up, and have someone mark the ceiling. Measure that, then subtract 7 ft to get your maximum drop.
Choosing a form for the void
Stairwells in two-storey houses are tall, narrow volumes. A wide horizontal fixture leaves most of that volume empty and tends to look like it was meant for a different room.
Vertical and cascading forms are the correct answer. A long crystal or glass cascade fills the height, catches light at multiple levels, and reads properly from both the ground floor and the landing — which matters, because a stairwell fixture is one of the few in a house viewed from two different elevations.
Sizing is more forgiving than in a room. Height is the dimension to get right; width matters much less. A fixture 40 to 60 inches tall suits a standard two-storey void, and taller is usually better than shorter in a genuinely double-height space.
One thing to check before falling in love with a cascade: how you will clean it, and how you will change any replaceable lamps. A fixture hanging 18 ft above a staircase is not accessible with a normal ladder, because you cannot safely stand a ladder on stairs. Either choose an integrated LED fixture with a long rated life, or fit a winch, or accept that you will be hiring scaffolding.

Branch and tiered forms work where the void is wider than it is tall — a half-landing turn, for instance, rather than a straight two-storey drop.
Lighting the steps themselves
The decorative fixture is not what makes a staircase safe. A step is visible because its edge casts a shadow, and a light directly overhead flattens tread and riser into one continuous surface. This is why grand stairwell chandeliers so often coexist with people feeling for the next step.
Light from the side. Wall-mounted sconces climbing the stairs, or recessed step lights set into the wall at low level, both produce the raking light that makes edges legible.
For sconces on a staircase, the measurement is the same principle as the fixture drop: measure from the tread directly below each one. Keep the centre 60 to 66 inches above that tread, so the sconces climb at the same angle as the stairs. Space them every three to five steps.
Choose a shallow projection. Anything sticking more than about 4 inches out from the wall is an obstacle for someone coming down in a hurry. Our wall sconce placement guide goes into the projection and spacing question in more detail.
Switching, which is not optional here
A staircase needs two-way switching — a switch at the bottom and a switch at the top, both controlling the same circuit. In many jurisdictions this is a requirement rather than a nicety, and for good reason.
If you are adding step lighting or sconces as a second layer, put them on their own circuit with their own two-way switching. A low-level layer that can be left on overnight is genuinely useful in a house with children or anyone who gets up in the night, and it is much more pleasant than switching on a full chandelier at 2am.
Hallways: the spacing problem
Hallways fail for a different reason. They are usually lit by one fixture in the middle, which leaves both ends dark and visually shortens the space.
The fix is more fixtures, smaller. For ceiling lights along a corridor, space them 6 to 8 ft apart and start roughly 3 to 4 ft from each end wall rather than centring the whole arrangement. Flush or semi-flush mounts are the right choice unless the hallway ceiling is unusually high.
For sconces along a hallway, 8 to 10 ft apart at 60 to 66 inches. Two well-spaced sconces will do more for a short hallway than one central ceiling fixture, because lighting the walls is what makes a narrow space feel wider. A corridor lit only from overhead reads as a tunnel.
Where a hallway has doors along it, try to avoid landing a fixture directly above a door. It looks unresolved and it means the light is spilling into the doorway rather than along the corridor.

Landings and turns
A half-landing is a genuinely difficult spot. It is usually too small for a substantial fixture, too dark to leave alone, and often has a window that makes it bright by day and very dark by night.
A flush or semi-flush mount plus one sconce is usually the right combination. If the landing is where the staircase turns, put the sconce on the wall you face as you come up, not on the wall you pass — it gives you something lit to walk toward.
Colour temperature and output
Keep circulation spaces at 2700K to 3000K, consistent with the rooms opening off them. Hallways and stairs are transition spaces, and a noticeable colour shift as you move between them and the living areas is unsettling in a way most people cannot name.
On output, circulation spaces want less than living spaces — roughly 10 to 20 lumens per square foot is sufficient. What matters far more than total brightness is that the light is distributed rather than concentrated in one point.
Put the main circuit on a dimmer if you can. A hallway at thirty percent in the evening is much more pleasant than a hallway at full output, and it makes the rooms leading off it feel warmer by contrast.
The checklist
- Stairwell fixture: 7 ft minimum clearance measured from the highest tread beneath it.
- Choose vertical or cascading forms for tall narrow voids; height matters more than width.
- Plan cleaning and lamp access before ordering anything hanging over stairs.
- Light steps from the side, never only from above.
- Staircase sconces: 60–66 inches above the tread below, every 3–5 steps, shallow projection.
- Hallway ceiling fixtures 6–8 ft apart; sconces 8–10 ft apart.
- Two-way switching top and bottom, plus a separate low-level layer if you can.
